How to Download a YouTube Video

SnapDL lets you save a YouTube video to your device in four quick steps — no app to install, no account to create, and no fee. This page walks you through the whole process, from copying the link to finding the finished file.

Before You Start

Make sure the video is public and that you have permission to save it. SnapDL only works with public, permitted content. Private videos, members-only or paid content, and DRM-protected streams are not supported. If the video plays publicly on YouTube, it is a good candidate.

You will need a modern browser — Safari or Chrome on iPhone, Chrome or Firefox on Android, or Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari on a computer.

The 4 Steps

Step 1 — Paste or Search

Go to the SnapDL homepage and use the download box at the top of the page.

  • Paste a link: copy a YouTube video link and paste it into the box, then press Download.
  • Search instead: switch to Search mode and type a keyword, a channel handle such as @channelname, or a hashtag such as #travel. Pick the video you want from the results.

Paste the link directly for the fastest result. For playlists, copy each video link separately — SnapDL saves one video at a time.

Step 2 — Select the Video

SnapDL shows the video’s title, channel, thumbnail, and length so you can confirm it is the right one. If you searched, click the result you want and SnapDL fetches its download options.

If no video appears, check that the link is a full video URL and that the video is public. Copy a fresh link from the video page and try again.

Step 3 — Choose Format & Quality

Pick from the formats the source offers for that video:

  • Video: MP4 or WEBM, in the resolutions the source exposes (for example 360p, 720p, or 1080p).
  • Audio-only: MP3 or M4A, when the provider makes an audio track available.

Higher quality appears only when the original was uploaded in that quality and the source exposes it. SnapDL never upscales or enhances files — the options you see are the exact variants provided for that video. If no audio option shows, the source did not expose one for that video.

Step 4 — Download

Click the download button next to your chosen format. The file saves to your device’s Downloads folder.

  • iPhone / iPad: tap Download when iOS prompts, then find the file in Files → Downloads.
  • Android: the file lands in your Downloads folder.
  • Windows / macOS: if the video opens in a tab instead of saving, right-click the video and choose “Save video as…” (on macOS, use the download button or Option + Click).

How to Copy a YouTube Link

Desktop (youtube.com)

Open the video on its own page, copy the full URL from the address bar, and paste it into SnapDL.

iPhone / iPad / Android

Open the video, tap Share, choose Copy link, and paste it into the input on SnapDL.

Shorts

Open the Shorts video, copy its link, and paste it here — it works the same way for public Shorts.

Playlists

Playlists are not supported. Open the playlist, copy each video’s link, and save them one by one.

Troubleshooting

  • “Invalid link”: make sure it is a full video URL like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=<id>, https://youtu.be/<id>, or https://www.youtube.com/shorts/<id>.
  • Video plays instead of downloading: use right-click → “Save video as…” on desktop, or choose Download when iOS prompts.
  • No audio option: audio-only appears only when the provider exposes an audio track for that video.
  • No HD or 4K: higher quality appears only when offered by the source and allowed in your region.
  • Download fails or nothing loads: the video may be private, region-locked, age-restricted, or removed. Confirm it plays publicly on YouTube, copy a fresh link from the video page, and try again.
  • File is very large: high-resolution videos take longer to prepare and need free storage space. Check your device storage before starting a large download.

A Note on Fair Use

Download only videos you own, have clear permission to use, or that YouTube itself offers a download option for. Respect creators’ rights and YouTube’s Terms of Service. SnapDL is built for personal, permission-based use — always check the rights before you save a video.
